James Gunn has confirmed that he has resumed writing for the second season of Peacemaker

James Gunn is currently hard at work on the highly anticipated second season of the show Peacemaker now that the writers strike has come to an end.

It has been confirmed by James Gunn that he is now working on the scripts for the second season of Peacemaker, which is one of the upcoming projects for the brand that will be overseen by the co-CEO of DC Studios. Despite the fact that 2021's The Suicide Squad was not DC's most profitable movie, particularly due to the fact that it was released during the pandemic, it was received well enough to allow Gunn the opportunity to make a spinoff focusing on one of the characters he introduced in the film. The spinoff will center on Deadshot. This led to the creation of an original Max series called Peacemaker, which stars John Cena in the role of the notorious anti-hero.

The majority of critics praised the show for its unique style, which was compared favorably to that of The Boys due to its graphic depictions of violence, mature subject matter, and gloomy comedy. Because of this, the streaming service immediately decided to give it a second season order. On the other hand, due to recent administrative shifts that have taken place behind the scenes at Warner Discovery, the production of new episodes has been substantially slowed down.

James Gunn was given the position of co-chief executive officer of DC Studios in 2022. DC Studios is a subsidiary that was established specifically to manage and develop television and film projects based on DC Comics characters, linking them into a much wider story. Gunn was given this position. Due to the fact that the director was now in charge of a substantial number of productions, it appeared as though "Peacemaker" was not even very close to being one of his top priorities. However, it would appear that he is already hard at work on the next chapter of the series.

What You Can Hope to See in the Second Season of Peacemaker

In the first season of Peacemaker, the plot picks up after the events of The Suicide Squad and follows Christopher Smith when it is revealed that the character did not perish but rather was hospitalized as a result of those events. In spite of the fact that he was unsuccessful in completing his objective, he is asked to join a new Task Force. He, along with Jennifer Holland's character Emilia Harcourt, Steve Agee's character John Economos, Danielle Brooks's character Leota Adebayo, and Chukwudi Iwuji's character Clemson Murn are tasked with foiling an alien invasion codenamed Project Butterflies.

The squad is able to beat the Butterflies in the season finale, but the plot that was being directed by Amanda Waller, played by Viola Davis, is revealed, which means that future episodes will most likely have to deal with the fallout from that. In point of fact, the upcoming season is planned to take place after the events of Waller, an additional spinoff of The Suicide Squad centered on the villainous character that the renowned actress portrayed, and it will continue the stories that were initiated in the film that was released in 2021.

The prior projects are not a part of the new narrative because Gunn just clarified that the new DCU canon will not begin until Creature Commandos and Superman: Legacy. Despite this, some plot lines and cast members will be consistent with the new stories.

It's possible that the next season of Peacemaker won't debut until 2025, despite the fact that Gunn has already begun writing it. The filmmaker previously stated that the show would launch after Superman: Legacy, which is scheduled to be released in theaters on July 11, 2025.
